A 13-year-old stabbed her dad to death after she fell in love with her stepmum and wanted to be in a relationship with her, police say.
The teenager is alleged to have stabbed Alex Ferreira, 33, in the chest with a household knife on Sunday night after he discovered the extent of her crush on his wife.
Before committing the crime the schoolgirl, who lived with her grandmother, allegedly drunk several cans of beer to ‘build up the courage’ to do it, authorities in Brazil say.
The pair apparently argued the night before the deadly attack after the victim found text messages and a letter written by his daughter to her 20-year-old step mother.
The letter professed a platonic love for the woman and begged her to separate from her dad so they could live together.
Police released a photo of Alex and said he had reportedly scolded his daughter, advising that her ‘passion’ was misguided.
Relatives claimed the adolescent became incensed after being chided and apparently harboured a grudge against her dad.
After downing the alcohol it’s believed she walked to her dad’s house, a block away from where she lived in Jataí, Goáis state, and banged on the door waking them up.
Police spokesman Antonisio Nunes told TV news Balanço Geral, that the stepmum opened the door.
“She told us her stepdaughter seemed remorseful after arguing with her dad and claimed that she had come around to make peace with him,” he said.
“She told the girl that her dad was asleep in their bedroom but he would probably be happy to get up so they could ‘make-up’.”
It’s reported that the girl concealed the knife in her clothing before entering the property and pulled it out when she entered the bedroom.
Officer Nunes said: “The victim’s wife told us that her husband was just about to get up when the girl lunged at her dad and plunged the knife into his chest.”
The weapon allegedly used in the crime was found in the house covered in blood.
Alex was rushed to Dr. Serafim de Carvalho hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
His daughter had already fled the property but was found just yards away ‘sitting quietly’ on the pavement outside her gran’s house.
When questioned she reportedly confessed to the crime, admitting that she had ‘fallen in love’ with her stepmother and was jealous of her relationship with her dad.
She claimed to have ‘lost it’ after arguing with her dad who ‘threatened to prevent her from visiting them’ if she continued with her infatuation.
A relative who declined to be named, claimed the girl’s ‘puppy love’ had been going on for several months prior to the tragic event and was an open secret among family members.
He said: “Her stepmum told us that she was aware of her stepdaughter’s obsession which had never encouraged it.
“She made it clear to (her stepdaughter) that she loved her dad and just wanted to be a good mum to his child.”
He said the family is devastated by the violent act and struggling to come to terms with the ‘senseless loss’.
“Everyone believed it was a passing phase that she would grow out of,” he lamented.
The teen was arrested and initially held at the local police station before being transferred to a juvenile detention centre.
She faces murder charges and is yet to hire a lawyer to represent her case.
Under Brazilian law her age means she could serve a maximum three year prison term with socio-educational measures to rehabilitate her back into the community.
